poster for the feature film, april.
_how
jason evans put us in touch with director of photography arseni khachaturan, who in turn put us in touch with writer / director dea kulumbegashvili. they were looking for a poster for dea's second feature film, april, which was having its world premiere at the venice film festival.  caspar watched the film and met with dea in berlin to discuss it.

a few days later we presented dea and arseni with a range of ideas, and they chose the approach you see here. the film is a dark, surrealistic tale about a female doctor in the country of georgia who performs unsanctioned abortions for woman, in face of oppressive, patriarchal and often religious resistance. the poster is an attempt to express the impossible and painful level of denial one feels the men in the film are imposing upon the women.

caspar made the poster with paper, ink, paint, a pencil, a knife, a printer, a camera and photoshop. the approach here, aesthetically speaking, is in part an homage to the great work of postermaker lanny sommese. however the influence of painters cy twombly and rené magritte is clearly in there too. do see this film if you have the means, it's remarkable.

poster for the feature film, familiar touch.
_how
friend and producer alexandra byer introduced us to sarah friedland. sarah was looking for a poster for her debut feature film, familiar touch. the film depicts a woman in her eighties dealing with the onset of dementia. it's a delicate and moving film that looks at how as our faculties fail us with age, others senses and experiences can become more pronounced.

we presented a series of ideas to sarah and after some discussion she went with the one you see here. sarah then took a photograph of lead-actor kathleen chalfant's hand and arm, and caspar used that image as a basis of a mixed-media painting. the poster, including its hand-painted lettering, was worked on in various countries, and finally finished in berlin.

during the making of the poster the film was selected for the 2024 venice film festival. do see it if you have the means.

poster for the feature film, joyland.
_how
producer apoorva charan reached out and asked that we might create a poster for joyland, a film co-written and directed by saim sadiq. the film, set in pakistan, is a beautifully crafted and emotionally complex drama that explores inner family politics with a notable level of realism and nuance.

we presented a range of ideas and saim and apoorva asked us to the explore the one you see here. making the poster involved hand-drawing the floor tiles from the family home's inner courtyard, and then removing lotus flowers from this design to reveal the three main characters seemingly witnessing each other's indiscretions.

as a final touch, the blood of an animal slaughtered in their courtyard is smeared across a few of the remaining lotus flowers to provide a suggestive balance to the otherwise cheery name of the film.

poster for the feature film, family portrait.
_how
we were introduced to lucy kerr by rob rice at FID marseille film festival last year. she had then just finished shooting her debut feature film family portrait back in the states. fast forward to a couple of months back and lucy reached out again and asked that we might do the titles and the poster design for the very same film.

the film is a remarkable piece of work. we watched it twice through the first time we sat with it. what you initially perceive to be one kind of film transforms into something entirely different as you watch it. the idea for the poster came very quickly to us on a call with lucy and her producer megan pickrell. the hard part was finding an old master painting we could use to successfully capture the treatment we were after. however when we stumbled upon the westwood children by joshua johnson we knew the search was over.

caspar made the poster in berlin with a printer, a scalpel and a camera. during the making of the poster the film was selected for the 2023 locarno film festival.

yellow vale pictures are releasing charlotte le bon's excellent film, falcon lake, in the united states. justin timms at yellow vale reached out to us with an interest in us making a theatrical poster for the film. we presented a range of ideas and charlotte went with the poster you see here.

our approach here is in part an homage to the great work of swedish artists inka and niclas lindergard. it was created by taking a photograph of a light source with grease smeared on the camera lens. the effect was then overlayed on a behind the scenes photograph from the film.

poster for the hybrid documentary, the act of coming out.
_how
filmmaker alexandra stergiou reached out and asked that we might make a poster for her new hybrid documentary, the act of coming out. the film has been released by the new yorker magazine and is comprised of a series of filmed auditions / interviews with queer and trans actors about what alexandra describes as "the never ending process of coming out." it's a beautiful, moving and seemingly effortless piece of filmmaking. we presented a series of ideas for the poster and the one you see here is the one alexandra went with. the final poster takes cues from the colour work of georges seurat, henri matisse and andy warhol in order to articulate its point.

you can watch the film here, and you can purchase a 27x40 inch copy of the poster from our print shop here.

matthew pusti of makeup and vanity set is scoring more and more films these days. this time around he was asked to score a documentary made about the making of the original batman: the animated series. to celebrate the release of the soundtrack on record store day, we teamed up once again with sound machine records to create something pretty special. the result is a visual expression of the aim of the documentary and a fresher take on the typical batman symbolism.

film poster for the feature film, superior.
_how
director erin vassilopoulos asked us to design both the poster and title sequence for her debut feature film, superior. the film is an 80s psychological thriller that explores the lives of two recently reunited identical twin sisters. as the twin's very different lives bleed together there's a feeling of yin and yang in terms of the impact they have on each other both physically and emotionally. it's this concept that we chose to touch upon in the poster.

film poster for the feature film, funny face.
_how
long-standing collaborator tim sutton asked us to take care of the posters and titles for his fifth feature film, funny face. the process with tim is always very fluid and open-ended. he brought some ideas to the table and we augmented those ideas. the poster you see here is one of a series we developed for the film.

in this case tim suggested using a caravaggio painting and we took it from there. caspar's father thomas newbolt then suggested we use caravaggio's painting of salome with the head of john the baptist. tim agreed and sent the funny face mask used in the film to caspar in berlin. caspar then lit the mask with similar lighting to the caravaggio painting and photographed it. the rest of the work from there on out is self-evident.

record sleeve for the berlin-based band, polinski.
_how
paul wolinski is one quarter of the experimental musical machine that is 65daysofstatic. polinski is his more purely electronic side-project.  the discussions for how to handle the artwork for the album started years before the record was even a twinkle in his eye. we'd talked at length for years about films, musics, books, games and designs that appeal to us for whatever reason. whether it be the books of jeff noon or the cassette loading games of sinclair ZX spectrum, there was an innate understanding of what this solo project would demand in terms of artwork the moment the demos started to come together.

the final artwork started with us coming up with a story that would capture paul's feelings about various things and how he wanted to translated those into a science fiction tale of some kind. the next step was padding that story out with various touchstone visual elements and then translating those into a series of panels that we could use for the album and any singles. the first image we put together turned out to be the album cover as it is now, and this went onto influence paul's approach to making the music. he then sent us more demos that inspired the creation of more panels, and so the back and forth went until we had enough to illustrate the story / world we had created.

website for the tron legacy soundtrack by daft punk
_how
understanding that we were enormous fans of the original TRON film, and its forthcoming sequel, topspin and disney asked us to create a site to gather emails for the new film's soundtrack release.

given the soundtrack was created by daft punk it was safe to assume anything we made would be very popular with fans of the band and the 80s film alike. as such, we took full advantage of some of the latest web technologies (with help from mr. doob) and produced a site that works on iphones, ipads as well as regular machines. the end result is a streamlined data collection / e-commerce site with a series of film-related easter-eggs for fans to discover.

artwork for the protomen's second album, act 2 - the father of death
_how
everything about this record cover and poster had to be bigger and better. the moment we heard act II: the father of death we knew the protomen had taken giant leaps as a band. consequently we wanted to produce artwork that celebrated and supported this excellent new music through and through.

once again we asked john delucca to bring his magic to the project. first he painted the fantastic streets of fire inspired cover, and then went on to create various other pieces for the album's illustrated "libretto" booklet. caspar then wove everything together for the 2009 compact disc release of the album, and the promo "movie poster" that went with it.

in 2018 it was time to release a deluxe, vinyl version of the album. for this the band wanted to make a book with a pop-up diorama of john's "how the world fell under darkness" illustration as the centrepiece. this time around caspar eschewed the rest of the CD artwork and replaced it with stills from the recently shot and released light up the night music video.
