filmmaker and friend dane komljen suggested ana lungu get in touch with us. her film merman had gotten into FID marseille film festival, and she wanted a poster for it. the film collages together three different stories from romania from the 1930s to the 1980s, with a seeming focus on one particular individual, alexandru popovici. popovici or "triton" (merman) as he calls himself, was a music teacher, amateur pornographer and government informant. his various affairs with his students he documented with photographs that he kept in a box with photographs he also took of flowers.
we pitched several ideas to ana and she went with the one you see here. caspar made it in berlin with flowers from local flower shops, all laid out on a light box and photographed.
