writer / director shelly yo reached out to us having stumbled across our work online. shelly had recently completed work on her first feature film, smoking tigers, and wanted a poster for its forthcoming theatrical / streaming release. the film is about a lonely, 16-year-old, korean-american girl who tries to hide her problematic family and lower-income background from her new wealthy friends, only to discover the struggles of adulthood that will forever shape her life.
we presented a range of ideas of ideas and shelly went with the one you see here. she mailed caspar the packet of korean cigarettes used in the film from los angeles, and he then photographed them with flowers sourced in berlin. the rest of the poster was built out from there, including a hand-distressed typographic treatment.
