writer / director and friend jorge thieland armand asked that we might make the poster and titles for his third feature film, death has no master. the film stars asia argento and follows the story of a woman traveling to venezuela to sell her late father’s cacao plantation. upon arrival she finds that the family mansion is now occupied by its former staff, who are determined to remain at all costs. caro decides then to take justice into her own hands to claim the inheritance she believes is hers, and in doing so she sets off a struggle that unearths the violence buried in the land and its memory.

we hit the ground running with jorge, creating the film's titles first and then the poster. the poster treatment was inspired by the teachings of joseph cambpell whose books and recordings caspar was studying at the time. it repurposes an image from canto XII of the gustave doré illustrated dante's inferno as a way of alluding to film's narrative. this particular book was chosen as a graphic foundation for the poster because it plays a part in the film, and because the minotaur / labyrinth story is one that—as joseph campbell suggests—represents the idea of facing one's personal demons. furthermore the minotaur himself (real name: asterion) is a mythological character that many now feel has been misunderstood; his condition the result of ungodly amounts of abuse and trauma.

the poster was created in berlin by caspar using a laptop, a printer, a scalpel, a scanner and a camera.

the film was selected by the cannes film festival whilst we were working on it. do see it if you have the means, it's a fantastic piece of work.

_what
poster for the short film, pasta negra.
_how
here's the second poster we made for jorge thielen armand's short film, pasta negra.

once again the film tells the story of a family—a grandmother, a mother with child and her sister—trying to cross the border into colombia. the photography in the film is such a thing to behold that only upon a second viewing were we able to pay attention to the story.

this poster speaks about the nature of the family's border crossing in the film. caspar made it using a wig, printer, paper and glue.

tim sutton introduced us to director jorge thielen armand. jorge had just finished work on a new short film set in venezuela and was looking for someone to make titles and a poster for it. we watched the film and leapt at the chance, for a thing of great beauty it is.

the film is called pasta negra. it tells the story of a family—a grandmother, a mother with child and her sister—trying to cross the border into colombia. the photography in the film is such a thing to behold that only upon a second viewing were we able to pay attention to the story.

we presented a range of ideas to jorge, and ended up making two posters for the film. the first poster you can see here, which—in homage to the beautiful collage work of najeebah al-ghadban—caspar made in the berlin studio with a wig, masking tape, a printer, paper, a knife and a camera.

the film was accepted into the sundance film festival whilst we were working on the poster. if you have the means we can't recommend seeing this film enough.
