jordon mattos of aspect ratio films put us in touch with writer / director paul carpenter. paul had just completed his first feature film and wanted to make a poster for it. the film, something solid (quelque chose de solide), is a slow, quiet and experimental piece that spoke to us in various ways. soon we were talking to paul about how best to represent it on paper.

the film depicts a couple living out their later years in a decrepit house in the french countryside. paul himself described the narrative as follows:

"the earth trembles, a donkey is on the loose and their house is falling down, yet the couple take it all in stride as they push through their daily lives in an isolated mountain valley. however even these stalwart villagers aren't immune to the rumbles of change that echo from both the outside world and from within themselves."

we presented paul with a range of ideas and he chose the one you see here. the image was created in part as an homage to a striking piece of work by riccardo guasco called siamo SOLI. caspar painted the house, the smoke and the sunset in the berlin studio using a brush and ink, and then transposed it into the poster format you see here.

the film was selected to play in the international competition at FICPBA in buenos aires.
