the film stage<\/a>\u00a0and MUBI<\/a> have kindly included our family portrait<\/a> and april<\/a> posters in their best movie posters of 2024 lists. whilst MUBI<\/em> placed dea kulumbegashvili’s april<\/em> poster in their 2024 runners up,\u00a0the film stage<\/em>\u00a0went as far as to consider our poster for lucy kerr’s family portrait<\/em> their 7th best poster of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much like the film\u2019s commentary on absence versus presence, Caspar Newbolt\u2019s poster for\u00a0Family Portrait<\/em> hinges upon the dynamic shared by those two states. Whether the hunt for a mother to take the Christmas card photo she enlisted them to take or pointed words read by the daughter searching for her so she can fly back home (\u201cWhere did my mother go when she would leave her empty gaze fixed on me?\u201d), there arrives a shift from opposition to coexistence\u2013\u2013we still have presence\u00a0through<\/em>\u00a0absence and can be absent\u00a0despite<\/em>\u00a0our presence. Thus Newbolt cuts the eyes out of Joshua Johnson\u2019s\u00a0The Westwood Children<\/em>\u00a0and places them upon a textured wash of color that thematically erases the bodies while simultaneously promising they\u2019ll exit the fog next. It\u2019s an illusion. Just like the photo. Because a finished product was never the goal; the portrait was simply an excuse to physically reunite one more time\u2026 just in case next year proves too late.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
