Robert McLean attended high school in Canada, graduating with an Ontario Scholarship. He was awarded the McEuen Scholarship in the University of St Andrews from where he holds Joint Honours BSc in Physics and Electronics (1981). He returned to Canada for postgraduate studies in molecular physics at the University of Western Ontario. In obtaining a Master of Science degree in Physics (1984), he conducted original research in the field of laser spectroscopy. In 1984, he moved to Britain and joined ICI to work on an optical data storage media, with responsibility for media physics and testing. The research at ICI led to the world's first flexible optical storage media, which was commercialised as a one TeraByte optical tape. From 1988 to 1990, he was seconded to work with Iomega Corporation at their optical disc drive laboratories in Boulder, Colorado, and was involved in many aspects of optical and electronic hardware for flexible optical disc drives. He was also responsible for coordinating the progress of hardware and media development, and for technology transfer. In 1995, he joined Dummett Copp as a technical assistant from another firm of patent agents, having passed with credit the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College in London. In 1997, Robert was awarded the CIPA Drafting Prize for the highest mark in the examination paper dealing with the preparation of UK and overseas patent specifications. Robert qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 1998, and as a UK Patent Agent in 1999. Robert McLean became a partner in 2000. He deals particularly with subject matter involving electronics or optics. |
